FromSoftware's Dodge Roll Merits Recognition

For those who have experienced the popular action RPG, or most other 3D action game, you're probably well-versed in the fantastic feature called the “evasion roll.” This evasion technique lets your avatar to carry out a forward, sideways, or backward somersault to avoid incoming harm and move away from the bad guy. Sounds handy, doesn't it?

The dodge roll, however, has attracted significant backlash, and not only as a result of the somersault; it's been called dumb, a cop-out, and an implausible action — and sometimes, I concur. You should see me rolling around local Doppler gangs in a well-known fantasy game — untouchable! But this game's evasion move represents the evasion to top all dodge rolls evasion moves, and here's the reason.

For this particular game, the designers identified an excellent method to counter all sentiments claiming the maneuver is too easy: merely bestow every enemy excessive power, increase it further, and every Tarnished who dares come near them will appreciate deeply thanks to their rolling skill, I'm no exception. Given the intense difficulty, evading successfully seems like an accomplishment, instead of an unfair advantage.

No different defensive move in Elden Ring matches this sense of satisfaction and reliability, because swift moves offer limited distance and blocking attempts are readily overcome by strong enemies. One player advised hopping as the main Elden Ring dodging technique, but in addition to lacking ideal movement, I didn't see how receiving a fatal blow might boost my prospects of beating enemies (inexperience, possibly).

Mastering the Technique

Although the rolling dodge offers respite in an incredibly challenging experience, it isn't without skill. Firstly, Elden Ring's dodge roll only triggers a window of invulnerability once you stop pressing the evasion key, which stops a rapid, fearful withdrawal from dangerous scenarios. Furthermore, although it may carry you off from foes, it's significantly more useful to utilize it as a moment to advance, preferably behind the opponent, and land some hits. And, finally, it remains necessary to comprehend and predict enemy attacks, as dodging at the start of a long charging animation may end your invincibility before the blow lands… which will seriously hurt.

A Balanced Mechanic

Even though rolling-dodging in rapid sequence could appear somewhat silly (kudos to the Witcher anew), this isn't really an option in Elden Ring. Of course, that fails to transform it into a realistic fighting maneuver — exactly the reason it would be terrifying to witness it in a title like a historical simulation — yet we're discussing a spectacular magical game under discussion, thus why worry?

Comparable to any well-executed evasion move, the game's dodge motion is enhanced with a little somersault-y hop at the commencement, offering a lively impression instead of placing the avatar downward. Based on your equipment, the maneuver might appear super agile or somewhat sluggish, but it remains faster and more fluid than the evasion moves featured in Dark Souls. Admittedly, you may embed your big blade into the ground while equipped with it, but that's your own fault for failing to use ranged weapons (In jest — don't play the game with a crossbow).

Ideal Equilibrium

The game's evasion system forms an optimal harmony between challenge and opportunity, granting chances of triumph while threatening to take that hope away at the tiniest misstep. Learn this skill, and you'll obtain more than triumph, but fulfillment.
