The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
